When you are dealing with essential oils, some of them were categorized as “hot oils” and this “hot” does not referring to warmed oil for massage or hot oil with high boiling temperature. This “hot” term refers to tingling sensation that it creates when apply to the skin. To reduce this effect, these types of essential oils need to be diluted with carrier oil such as almond oil, olive oil or jojoba oil. Some of hot oils include:
- Clove oil, Lemongrass oil, Oregano oil, Cinnamon Bark oil, Black Pepper oil, Ginger Oil and Thyme oil.
There are also warm essential oils, means the sensory effect is not as strong as “hot oils’’ when applied to the skin. Some of warm oils include:
- Bergamot, Cypress, Douglas Fir, Frankincense, Juniper and Citrus oil.
After diluted with carrier oil, it is advisable to do a patch test to discover skin sensitivity to any of these essential oils that you want to apply to the skin. 2 drops of it, is enough to be applied on a patch of skin such as forearm and it need 2 to 3 hours for any noticeable reaction. If there are any irritation or redness, it means you have sensitivity to the oil.
